The Effect of the Types of Economic Activities Transition on the Quality of Life of Middle-Aged and Elderly People: The Moderating Effects of Gender and Age

|
This study aims to examine how economic activities affect the quality of life according to the gender and age of middle-aged and elderly people, and suggest specific directions for supporting economic activities to improve the retirement life of middle-aged and elderly people. It was divided into economic activity maintenance type, non-economic activity maintenance type, economic activity start type, and economic activity end type, based on whether middle-aged and elderly people continue economic activity for a certain period of time. How the type of economic activity transition affects the quality of life was examined through the moderating effect of gender and age. The study used the 2nd through 7th datasets(2008-2018) from the Korea Longitudinal Study of Aging. This resulted in 22,573 observations from 6,706 persons, which were analyzed as Generalized Estimating Equation model. As a result, the quality of life was higher in the economic activity start type or the economic activity maintenance type than in the non-economic activity maintenance type. However, the quality of life was lower in the economic activity end type than in the non-economic activity maintenance type. Compared to the non-economic activity maintenance type, in the economic activity maintenance type the quality of life increased more rapidly when men and aged 65 or older continued to work compared to women and aged 65 or less. Therefore, it is necessary to support the economic activities of middle-aged and elderly people based on the results of the study.
